Is your child struggling with reading, spelling, comprehension, or putting their ideas into writing?

You're in the right place.

Reading and writing are deeply connected to language, which is why an SLP can offer a unique perspective on literacy. At Diverse Learners, we look at the language skills underlying reading and writing—including vocabulary, comprehension, sentence structure, and storytelling—to understand what may be getting in the way and provide targeted support.

Who Can Benefit?

Reading and writing support may be helpful for children who:

  • Have difficulty learning to read or spell
  • Struggle to sound out or decode unfamiliar words
  • Read slowly, inaccurately, or with significant effort
  • Have difficulty understanding what they read
  • Struggle to organize or express their ideas in writing
  • Have difficulty with sentence structure, grammar, vocabulary, or storytelling
  • Avoid reading or writing or become frustrated by literacy tasks
  • Have been identified with a learning disability or dyslexia
  • Are neurodivergent and experience challenges with reading and writing
  • Have multiple exceptionalities and require individualized literacy support
  • Are not making the expected progress despite school-based intervention
  • Need support connecting their oral language skills to reading and writing

You do not need to wait for a formal diagnosis to seek support. If your child is struggling with reading or writing, an individualized assessment can help identify the skills that are getting in the way and determine what support may be helpful.

In-Home or Virtual?

Which would work best for my child?

In-Home

In-home sessions bring literacy support into your child’s familiar environment and can be a great fit for younger children or those who benefit from learning at home. Sessions may include structured reading and writing activities, books, games, and other activities tailored to your child’s needs and interests.

Virtual

Virtual literacy therapy allows us to work directly with your child through our secure online platform, making it convenient for families across Ontario. Sessions are highly interactive and can target reading, spelling, comprehension, written expression, and the language skills that support literacy.

Our Approach to Supporting Reading & Writing Skills

At Diverse Learners, we make reading and writing instruction clear, structured, and tailored to how your child learns best.

We use evidence-based, structured literacy approaches adapted to your child’s learning needs and interests. Structured literacy provides explicit, systematic instruction in the building blocks of reading and spelling, including sound-letter relationships, decoding, spelling, and word structure.

Our SLPs have advanced literacy training and extensive experience supporting neurodivergent children, children with dyslexia and learning disabilities, and children with multiple exceptionalities. We personalize instruction using books, topics, and activities that make learning meaningful and engaging.

Collaboration With School Teams

Our goal is not simply to help your child complete therapy activities. We want the skills they develop to carry over into the reading and writing they encounter at school and at home.

Because of our experience in school settings, we can help families understand how literacy skills connect to classroom expectations, IEP goals, and specialized education supports. We can also help identify practical ways to reinforce developing skills outside of therapy

When appropriate, we can work collaboratively with teachers and other members of your child's school support team to help create a more consistent approach across settings.
